How did your journey in China begin?
你的中國(guó)之旅是如何開(kāi)始的？
After my college graduation, I met up with my high school friend, Renelyn, who was at that time working as a foreign teacher in Xiamen city. After hearing her wonderful experience here in Xiamen, I asked her the procedure on how to apply to work as ESL teacher. At that time, the qualifications required for ESL teachers weren’t that stringent, basically, the requirements were to hold a Bachelor’s degree and a TESL? certificate. I was lucky enough to pass all interviews and landed my first job as a foreign teacher in Xiamen Educational College which eventually merged with 2 other colleges and renamed into Xiamen City Vocational College.
大學(xué)畢業(yè)后，我偶遇了高中同學(xué) Renelyn，她當(dāng)時(shí)在廈門做外教。她給我講了在廈門的精彩故事，然后我問(wèn)她如何申請(qǐng)成為 ESL（以英語(yǔ)為第二語(yǔ)言） 教師。當(dāng)時(shí)，對(duì) ESL 教師的資格要求并不嚴(yán)格，基本要求是持有學(xué)士學(xué)位和 TESL（英語(yǔ)作為第二外語(yǔ)教學(xué)） 證書。我很幸運(yùn)地通過(guò)了所有的面試，在廈門教育學(xué)院找到了我的第一份工作——外教，該學(xué)院最終與其他兩所學(xué)院合并，更名為廈門城市職業(yè)學(xué)院。
What do you like most about Xiamen and China as a whole?
你最喜歡廈門/中國(guó)的什么？
There are so many things that impress me, but from the top of my head, it would be the level of cleanliness and beautiful landscapes –mountains, seas and gardens within the city. Every time I return to Xiamen whether by plane, train, bus or car, I know I’ve entered Xiamen just by looking at the streets.
給我留下深刻印象的東西有很多，首先想到的是這座城市的干凈以及美麗的風(fēng)景——美麗的山、海和花園。每次我回到廈門，無(wú)論是乘坐飛機(jī)、火車、公交車還是小車，只要看到廈門的街道，我就知道我已經(jīng)進(jìn)入廈門。
What fascinated you the most about living in China?
居住在中國(guó)，最吸引你的是什么？
What fascinates me most about living in China is the rapid development of mass transit. In 2005, I had to travel to HK twice a year to visit my family. Back then, I had to endure a 9-hour bus ride from Xiamen to HK. In 2013, the high speed train from Xiamen-Shenzhen took 3.5 hours + 3 hours transit from Shenzhen to Kowloon city. From 2018, the direct train from Xiamen to Kowloon West train station all takes only 4 hours! It’s nothing short of phenomenal!
生活在中國(guó)，最吸引我的是快速發(fā)展的公共交通。2005 年，我每年都要去香港探親兩次。那時(shí)，廈門到香港需要乘坐 9 個(gè)小時(shí)的大巴。2013 年，廈門到香港需要先乘坐 3.5 小時(shí)的高鐵到深圳，然后在深圳換乘，3 個(gè)小時(shí)到九龍城。2018 年，廈門到九龍西火車站開(kāi)通了直達(dá)高鐵，從此，廈門到香港只需要 4 個(gè)小時(shí)！這簡(jiǎn)直是驚世駭俗的壯舉！
What is your unique China story?
你在中國(guó)有什么特別的經(jīng)歷？
Being a foreign expert in China, I’m entitled to a lot of perks and privileges like being invited to government banquets for official celebration of National Day Holiday and given the chance to attend exclusive conferences, for example the 30th Anniversary of the Xiamen Economic Special Zone. It makes us feel very welcome and special. We are usually given VIP treatment which I would never get to experience back home.
作為一名在華外籍專家，我享有很多福利和特權(quán)，比如被邀請(qǐng)參加政府慶祝國(guó)慶的宴會(huì)，參加一些特別的盛會(huì)，例如廈門經(jīng)濟(jì)特區(qū)成立 30 周年慶祝大會(huì)。這令我們感受到了歡迎和特殊照顧。我們通常會(huì)享受 VIP 待遇，這是我在菲律賓永遠(yuǎn)無(wú)法體驗(yàn)到的。

介紹一下菲律賓
Philippines is known to have the longest Christmas season in the world as Filipinos start playing Christmas songs on the radio and start hanging Christmas decors at home and in commercial establishments quite early. The whole Christmas spirit usually starts when –ber months kick in, which is September all the way to the 1st week of January which ends at the Feast of Epiphany.
菲律賓是世界上圣誕季最長(zhǎng)的國(guó)家，菲律賓的廣播很早就開(kāi)始播放圣誕歌曲，人們也很早開(kāi)始在家里和公司中懸掛圣誕裝飾品。九月開(kāi)始就能感受到圣誕的氣氛，一直延續(xù)到第二年一月的第一周，也就是主顯節(jié)才結(jié)束。
