Marco Polo Xiamen hosted on November 9 the opening of the annual summit for the Translation Service Committee of the Translators Association of China (TAC-LSC Summit 2024). The Translators Association of China hosted the three-day conference series. The Xiamen-based language service provider Master Translation organized the event. The summit brought together experts, scholars, entrepreneurs and practitioners from the global language service sector to explore topics such as opportunities and challenges posed by emerging technologies like artificial intelligence, machine translation and large language models.
Gu Xiaofang, secretary general of the Translation Service Committee of the Translators Association of China, hosted the opening ceremony of the event. Huang Song, executive vice president of the Translators Association of China, delivered a welcome speech, highlighting the crucial role of translation services in global communication and cultural exchange. Huang Youyi, executive vice president of the Translators Association of China and vice president of the China Academy of Translation, gave a speech.
Other keynote speakers included Yu Yang, executive deputy director of the Translation Service Committee of the Translators Association of China, Wang Wei, vice president of AI solutions firm iFlytek, and Lin Wei, vice president of Transn IOL Technology. Hélène Pielmeier from CSA Research, Josef Kubosky from Nimdzi Insights and Arancha Caballero from Aneti also shared their insights. Topics of discussion included the evolution of large language models and the ways in which AI can assist in multilingual cultural communication.
Ms. Su Yang from Talking China moderated a roundtable devoted to potential models for the future of language services. Other participants included Dr. Wang Huashu from Beijing Foreign Studies University, Mr. Wei Zebin from EC Innovations, Inc., Mr. Liu Haiming from Shenzhen Glodom Technology and Ms. Wu Haiyan from Centific.
“The application of AI in language services has become an inevitable trend,” said Jevon Hercules, a senior localization expert from Cameroon. “However, this does not mean that human translation will be replaced,” he added. “Combining AI with human translation will achieve more accurate and efficient services.”
Mr. Hercules added that a human-machine integration model may well guide the future of the language service industry and provide a foundation for more enterprises to enter international markets.
Luz Sanchis, who hails from Spain and works at Master Translations, said that AI is a boon for translators. “There is a positive approach towards AI in the translation and interpretation industry,” said Ms. Sanchis.
“AI tools should not be perceived as a threat but as an opportunity for companies like ours to empower our translators and interpreters and to automate,” she added. “In the past, translators worked with specialized dictionaries for legal, medical or technical words, and that completely changed with the arrival of computers and the internet,” she recalled.
“Technology revolutionized this profession again with the arrival of computer-assisted translation tools and many feared it would be the end of our profession,” she noted. “It was not the end, although it was a massive shift on the way things got done. Now, AI is here to do that once again.”
The forum also addressed language service opportunities in emerging markets such as the Middle East and Africa. Speakers highlighted the efficiency advantages of AI and machine translation while stressing the role of human translation in cultural adaptation and localization for films, television series and other cultural products.
Other topics of note at the conference included the opportunities and challenges for going global, the future of China’s language service standards and the importance of certification systems in guaranteeing service quality.
